In a notable shift from their previous work, Ghost Town Games is set to release Stage Fright, a co-op adventure designed to foster collaboration rather than chaos. Known for their hit series Overcooked, which has earned the moniker “The Divorce Kitchen” in some circles, the developers are now focusing on a gameplay experience that strengthens bonds between players.
In Stage Fright, two players will embark on a whimsical journey, guiding a pair of children through a world reminiscent of Luigi’s Mansion. The game is structured around solving puzzles, dodging threats, and unraveling a mystery, all while relying solely on their partner’s support. The developers have emphasized maintaining the accessibility that made Overcooked a favorite, opting for a simple single-button mechanic amidst the more intricate gameplay.
“Imagine family-friendly Silent Hill”
De-Vine, one of the developers, shared insights into the game’s design philosophy, particularly regarding its puzzle mechanics. “We aim to create an experience where players don’t need to jot down notes,” he explained. “All communication occurs verbally between players, enhancing the collaborative aspect.” The game eschews traditional inventory management, opting instead for tangible items that players carry, echoing the visual style of Overcooked with its large, easily identifiable objects.
When questioned about the game’s structure, De-Vine likened it to an escape room experience. “You might encounter a clue that isn’t directly tied to your current puzzle, requiring players to remember it for later use,” he noted. He humorously compared the game’s linearity to that of Silent Hill, clarifying that while the comparison may seem odd, it captures the essence of a guided adventure. “Imagine a family-friendly version of Silent Hill,” he laughed, hinting at the intriguing blend of lightheartedness and mystery that Stage Fright promises to deliver.
