Almost 200 Overwatch staff unionise

In a significant development within the gaming industry, nearly 200 developers dedicated to the Overwatch series have united to form a collective known as The Overwatch Gamemakers Guild-CWA. This initiative, announced by the Communications Workers of America (CWA), represents a comprehensive union that spans all levels of staff and departments within the studio. The diverse membership includes professionals from design, production, engineering, art, sound, and quality assurance.

Empowerment Through Unity

VFX artist and member of the organizing committee, Frank Le Cocq, shared insights into the motivations behind this unionization effort. He noted that the wave of layoffs affecting the video game industry, including his own studio, served as a catalyst for his desire to foster a healthier workplace environment. “When we began our union efforts, it was empowering to know that our coworkers next door at World of Warcraft had already successfully gone through the process,” Le Cocq remarked, highlighting the importance of solidarity in the face of industry challenges.

Foster Elmendorf, a senior test analyst and fellow organizing committee member, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the long-standing issues of layoffs, excessive crunch periods, and inadequate working conditions that have plagued the global gaming sector. “My coworkers and I are thrilled to be joining the broader union effort to organize our industry for the better, which has been long overdue,” Elmendorf stated. He believes that collective action enables workers to advocate for initiatives that not only enhance their own workplace but also contribute positively to the gaming landscape as a whole.
