In a recent conversation with Bloomberg, LocalThunk, the enigmatic creator behind the chaotic poker roguelike Balatro, unveiled intriguing insights regarding the highly anticipated gameplay update, now designated as version 1.1. This update, first hinted at by publisher Playstack in August, is set to enhance the gaming experience for players in 2025.

LocalThunk, known for his discretion, was cautious about disclosing too many specifics about the forthcoming update. “I’m not going to get into exactly what’s going to be in it, because that also means I can’t pivot if something new doesn’t work,” he explained. This approach, he believes, allows for a more refined final product. “I think it’s healthier if I keep my cards close to my chest, then give you the best version of whatever this new content update is.”
According to the Balatro Wiki, the game has its quirks, noting that it “doesn’t work with all boss blinds, and can occasionally give results inconsistent with what one might expect.” One of the confirmed adjustments in the upcoming update involves the blue stake, a difficulty modifier that will reduce the number of discards by one, adding a fresh layer of strategy to gameplay.
LocalThunk’s passion for the game is evident as he reflects on his own experiences. “I play a lot too, and notice flaws all the time,” he remarked, indicating a continuous desire for improvement. While he is currently focused on the 1.1 update, he has contemplated future projects. However, he remains grounded, stating, “I don’t have any imminent game ideas I want to make. I have thought of other game ideas in the past, but every time my mind goes down that road, I immediately think, ‘You can’t do that right now, you’re in the middle of something else,’ which I think has served me very well.”
The dedication to refining Balatro has not gone unnoticed, as the game recently secured the prestigious overall game of the year award for 2024, triumphing over notable titles such as Shadow of the Erdtree, Helldivers 2, and Metaphor: ReFantazio. This accolade speaks volumes about the game’s impact and the anticipation surrounding its future developments.
