Blades of Fire is a God of War-style action game coming to PC from the creators of Metroid Dread, and it’s almost definitely a spiritual successor to Severance

Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam has unveiled its latest project, Blades of Fire, a visually stunning action-adventure game that promises to deliver a faster-paced and more visceral experience reminiscent of Sony’s acclaimed God of War reboots. Set to launch on PC in May, the game’s trailer has already captivated audiences with its impressive graphics and dynamic gameplay.

Game Overview

In Blades of Fire, players step into the shoes of the battle-hardened warrior, Aran de Lira. His mission? To confront a formidable evil queen who possesses the unsettling ability to transform metal into stone. This presents a unique challenge for Aran, particularly as he is a warrior who relies heavily on his steel weaponry. To complicate matters further, the queen’s minions wield a mysterious super-metal capable of shattering conventional blades, raising the stakes for every encounter.

Interestingly, the game draws parallels to Severance: Blade of Darkness, a title that holds a special place in gaming history. MercurySteam, the studio behind Blades of Fire, emerged from the remnants of Rebel Act Studios, the original developers of Severance. The main character, Aran, bears a striking resemblance to Severance’s iconic barbarian, Turkaram, albeit with a more polished and rugged appearance. Additionally, the limb-targeting combat system evokes memories of Blade of Darkness, which was celebrated for its innovative approach to melee combat.

While there has been no official confirmation from MercurySteam regarding any direct connections to Severance, the thematic and stylistic similarities are enough to pique the interest of fans of the genre. With its release set for May 22 on the Epic Store, Blades of Fire is certainly on the radar for those eager to explore its brutal combat mechanics and rich narrative.
