Bungie prepares for Marathon closed beta

Developer Bungie is preparing to initiate a technical beta for its highly anticipated title, Marathon. According to a recent announcement on the studio’s website, this exclusive test will take place from October 22nd to 28th, and is available by invitation only. Interested participants can sign up now to potentially secure a spot.

Details of the Technical Beta

This beta phase is governed by a non-disclosure agreement, a prudent measure considering the mixed feedback that previous tests have garnered. Bungie emphasized the significance of this checkpoint in their development process, stating, “This is an important checkpoint for us as we test our improvements since Alpha.” The beta will showcase:

  • Three maps
  • Five runner shells
  • Proximity chat
  • Re-tuned combat pacing
  • Solo queue functionality
  • Deeper environmental storytelling
  • And more

Bungie clarified that the Technical Test build is still a work in progress, offering only a glimpse of what players can expect in the full release of Marathon, particularly focusing on enhancing the early player experience.

Originally announced in 2023, Marathon was slated for a September 2025 launch. However, this timeline was pushed back following an alpha test that received a less-than-favorable reception. Additionally, the game faced controversy due to allegations of stolen art appearing within its content. As it stands, Marathon currently lacks a definitive release date.

As part of Sony’s broader strategy to delve into live-service gaming, Marathon represents a key component of their vision. Nonetheless, the company has openly acknowledged that this venture has faced challenges thus far.
