Capcom was reluctant to release original Resident Evil titles on GOG

Capcom’s Journey to Revive Classic Titles on GOG

In a recent discussion with The Games Business, Marcin Paczynski, senior business development manager at GOG, shed light on the intriguing negotiations with Capcom regarding the release of older Resident Evil titles on their platform. Initially, Capcom exhibited reluctance, expressing a belief that their remastered versions offered a superior gaming experience, leaving little incentive to revisit the original games.

Paczynski recounted Capcom’s perspective: “They were firm in their stance, stating, ‘We have all of those remakes. It’s already the superior experience to those games.’” This viewpoint posed a challenge for GOG, as they sought to demonstrate the enduring appeal of the classic versions. It required considerable persuasion to highlight the nostalgia and fond memories that many gamers associate with these titles.

Ultimately, GOG’s efforts bore fruit. Paczynski noted, “We were able to convince them,” leading to the successful launch of the classic Resident Evil games on their platform. The response from the gaming community was overwhelmingly positive, with Paczynski reporting, “When we launched [Resident Evil] on GOG, the reception was absolutely phenomenal.”

The success was reflected in the impressive statistics, boasting a remarkable 94 percent positive review rate across all titles. This enthusiastic reception not only validated GOG’s strategy but also underscored the lasting value of these classic games. “It proved that there is an audience for this,” Paczynski emphasized. “The classical versions, the versions we all remember from our childhood, they still hold a lot of value.”
