Korean Developer Challengers Games Closes Doors

Korean developer Challengers Games is shutting down, according to a post on the company’s website by CEO Koji Tamura. The company has accumulated ₩2.4 billion (.7 billion) in debt, attributed to various expenses such as server costs, payroll, advertising, marketing, insurance, and shareholders.

Additionally, Challengers is under investigation by Korea’s Ministry of Labor and Employment, with ongoing issues related to the development of Illang and Second Wave. Illang, a mobile title launched in February, faced technical problems due to server issues. On the other hand, Second Wave, which entered Steam Early Access on May 31st, received negative reviews and is now being canceled due to financial constraints.

Tamura expressed hope for future plans involving the Second Wave IP while initiating refunds for Steam users who purchased the game. In a message to supporters, he expressed regret for letting them down and thanked them for their belief in the company. Despite the closure of Challengers Games Corp, Tamura remains optimistic about the future of game development.
