‘Everybody should play every fighting game’ says Invincible VS director: ‘They’re just fun’

Fighting games have long been recognized for their complexity, not just in terms of mastering intricate input combinations and character match-ups, but also in their marketability. The recent launch of the League of Legends fighter 2XKO serves as a stark reminder of this challenge, as the game faced significant setbacks, resulting in the layoff of 80 developers shortly after its debut.

Emerging Contenders in a Competitive Landscape

Despite these hurdles, the current year stands out as a remarkable period for fighting games, with several new titles vying for attention alongside the highly anticipated Street Fighter 6. Among these contenders, Marvel Tōkon from the creators of Guilty Gear, Arc System Works, appears to be a strong candidate. However, two licensed titles, Avatar Legends and Invincible VS, are generating considerable excitement. Both games, rooted in popular animated series, reflect a deep passion for the fighting genre from their developers.

One of the developers, reflecting on their experience with the acclaimed Killer Instinct, expressed enthusiasm about returning to the fighting game arena. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work on a fighting game, and being able to come back and create Invincible VS is truly exciting,” they remarked. Unlike Killer Instinct, which focused on one-on-one battles, Invincible VS leverages its superhero roster to create a dynamic tag team experience. This game is part of a trio of similar titles scheduled for release within a span of ten months, following 2XKO last October and leading up to Marvel Tōkon in August 2026.

From early gameplay experiences, it seems Invincible VS successfully captures the essence of the multi-character battles featured in the animated series. While some may argue that the game is more accessible than traditional tag fighters—often criticized for their lengthy and punishing combo strings—it still embraces a level of complexity. Hall, another developer, emphasized their commitment to integrating teammates into the combo system, ensuring that the gameplay remains engaging for both casual players and veterans alike.

What sets Invincible VS apart may be its unique blend of cartoonish violence and over-the-top action, reminiscent of the iconic Mortal Kombat series. As the animated adaptation of Invincible continues to thrive in its fourth season on Amazon, the developers are also hinting at a single-player mode that will involve contributions from the show’s writers.

When discussing the benchmarks for success, Hall highlighted the importance of community feedback. “We take all feedback seriously, and we listen to every single part of it,” he stated. The team is committed to ongoing playtesting to ensure they are on the right path leading up to the game’s release. “For us, success is simply about creating a badass game, and we hope the fans will resonate with it.”
