Expect plenty more Silent Hill over the next few years, as Konami has plans for ‘second and third waves’ of new games in its revived horror series

Silent Hill’s revival stands out as a notable success story within the gaming industry, marking a significant turnaround after a prolonged hiatus. After nearly ten years of dormancy, the franchise has re-emerged with three new titles released by Konami over the past three years. Each of these entries—Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill f, and Silent Hill: Townfall—has garnered positive reviews and appears to be performing well in terms of sales.

Plans for the Future

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamoto expressed a sense of relief regarding the favorable critical and commercial reception of these titles. “All three titles we initially announced were able to be released successfully,” Okamoto noted, reflecting on the positive feedback they have received. He added, “they’ve also received high praise, and we are satisfied with it.”

This resurgence is a stark contrast to the franchise’s situation just a few years ago. Okamoto shared that convincing Konami’s executives to greenlight new entries was no small feat, particularly in the wake of the cancellation of Hideo Kojima’s ambitious Silent Hills project in 2015. While he succeeded in getting the Silent Hill 2 remake approved, he believed that a single remake would not suffice. “If there were only one release, wouldn’t people think that the development is going to be cancelled again?” he questioned, emphasizing the need for a broader revival.

Looking ahead, the prospect of remaking the original 1999 Silent Hill presents an intriguing challenge, especially given its more straightforward narrative compared to its celebrated sequel. The approach taken by Bloober Team in this endeavor will be closely watched by fans and critics alike.

As for the future involvement of NeoBards Entertainment and Screen Burn Interactive in the franchise, their return remains unconfirmed. However, according to Silent Hill expert Elie Gould, both developers have demonstrated their capability. In his review of Silent Hill f, he described the game as a “true return to form,” while praising Screen Burn’s understanding of what makes a compelling Silent Hill experience in his review of Silent Hill: Townfall, which explores the eerie Scottish town of St. Amelia.
