Final Fantasy 11 takes cues from FF14 as Square Enix plans a dramatic free trial expansion

In a notable shift, Final Fantasy 11 is poised to enhance its free trial experience, drawing inspiration from its successful MMORPG counterpart, FF14. The latter’s free trial has been a cornerstone of its popularity, allowing players unrestricted playtime and the opportunity to reach level 80, including access to the acclaimed Shadowbringers storyline—all at no cost.

Upcoming Changes to Free Trial

While the adjustments for FF11 may not mirror the expansive offerings of FF14 just yet, they represent a significant upgrade from the current two-week trial period. During a recent developer livestream, the team unveiled a series of updates slated for the remainder of the year, with the most impactful news emerging around the two-hour and 26-minute mark. Here, the developers shared their vision for the future, including plans to eliminate the existing time constraints on the free-to-play version of the game.

As highlighted by Reddit user ‘Hikiri’ (via Gamespot), the proposed changes would remove the two-week limit entirely, allowing players to explore FF11 at their leisure. Additionally, the level cap for trial players would be raised from 50 to 75. However, certain restrictions will remain in place to deter farming bots and scammers, including limitations on using the player auction house, inviting others to parties, earning more than 100,000 gil at a time, utilizing the world transfer service, and communicating through tell, shout, and yell modes. These measures echo those implemented in the FF14 trial.

Director Yoji Fujito expressed his thoughts on the current trial limitations, stating, “I think everyone knows how long you can play during the free trial – it’s 14 days. In two weeks, if you can go to a place that’s this good, I feel like that might not be quite enough.” He acknowledged that the existing restriction feels “a bit outdated” and emphasized the team’s ongoing discussions about potential changes, leaning towards an indefinite trial period.

Fujito elaborated on the benefits of an open-ended trial, suggesting that it would allow players to set goals and fully engage with the game. He also noted that the current level-50 cap can hinder progress, particularly when tackling challenging missions like the Shadow Lord. While he recognizes the argument for requiring payment to access higher levels, he is considering raising the cap to enhance the overall experience.

The proposed adjustment to a level cap of 75, while still restricting access to expansion areas, encourages players to consider upgrading sooner rather than later. Although Fujito initially contemplated raising the cap to level 99, he deemed this unrealistic due to item level restrictions.

While a specific timeline for these changes has yet to be established, Fujito conveyed the team’s eagerness to implement them as soon as possible. He also mentioned the desire to lay the groundwork for these enhancements ahead of the game’s 25th anniversary in May 2027. To commemorate the upcoming 24-year milestone, a special short film has been crafted by animator ‘Waboku,’ which is available for viewing.

For those who have hesitated to commit to Final Fantasy 11, the anticipated overhaul of the free trial may provide the perfect opportunity to dive in. With the prospect of extended playtime and a higher level cap, it seems more players might soon find themselves exploring the enchanting world of Vana’diel.
