FromSoftware says Elden Ring’s popular Seamless Co-op mod is ‘definitely not something we actively oppose,’ and may even ‘consider ideas like that with our future games’

Embracing Co-op in Elden Ring

The week before heading to Tokyo to cover Shadow of the Erdtree for PC Gamer, I realized I needed to sharpen my Elden Ring skills. Opting for a different approach, I enlisted a friend to try out the Seamless Co-op mod, which turned out to be a thrilling experience. I highly recommend it to anyone revisiting Elden Ring after their initial playthrough.

Co-op has always been my preferred way to delve into FromSoftware’s games, and Elden Ring, in some aspects, simplifies the process of summoning friends to tackle bosses and dungeons together compared to Dark Souls. However, it does come with its share of limitations, such as the inability to ride Torrent in the open world. During my interview with FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki for the cover story, I highlighted how Seamless Co-op enables players to engage in a seamless multiplayer session throughout the entire game and inquired about his thoughts on this alternative way of experiencing the game.

The Seamless Co-op mod has gained significant traction on the Elden Ring Nexusmods page, boasting an impressive 3.6 million downloads. This popularity speaks volumes, even for a studio renowned for its distinctive creative direction. It’s clear that this innovative approach to multiplayer gameplay has struck a chord with the gaming community.
