Google is turning Gemini into a gaming sidekick with a new Android overlay

Google Introduces Play Games Sidekick for Gamers

Google has unveiled a new software overlay called Play Games Sidekick, designed to enhance the gaming experience on mobile devices. This feature allows users to access Gemini Live while playing games, along with other gaming-focused updates to Google Play.

Sidekick appears as a small, moveable tab in games downloaded from the Play Store, providing easy access to features like screenshot buttons, screen recording tools, and shortcuts for going live on YouTube. Additionally, users can view achievements and other game stats within the overlay.

Google has emphasized the role of AI in Sidekick, particularly in delivering game tips and strategies to players. Gemini Live, a key component of Sidekick, offers curated game tips and can provide guidance without detailed context from the user.

While Sidekick won’t replace traditional game guides, it offers a convenient way to access quick answers while playing. Similar to Microsoft’s Gaming Copilot, Google’s AI-powered features will be available in select games over the coming months, including titles from partners like EA and NetMarble.

Enhancing the Gaming Experience on Google Play

Google’s updates to Google Play Games aim to unify the fragmented gaming experience on mobile devices. The introduction of a platform-level gaming profile allows users to track stats and achievements across Android and PC, as well as connect with friends and participate in game forums.

These updates signal Google’s commitment to improving the gaming experience on its platform, following previous setbacks with projects like Stadia. The PC version of Google Play Games is also set to leave beta, positioning Google as a more direct competitor to established gaming platforms like Steam.
