Grand Theft Auto 5 has now sold an incredible 220 million copies

In a recent conversation with Chris Dring at The Game Business, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, addressed the ongoing anticipation surrounding the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. Despite the game’s release date being pushed back twice, Zelnick reassured shareholders by highlighting the impressive sales figures of its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5. Since its launch in 2013, GTA 5 has achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing 220 million copies sold, a feat that includes the immensely popular GTA Online.

Sales Performance and Future Outlook

Zelnick’s comments come at a time when the gaming community is eager for updates on GTA 6, now slated for release on November 19, 2026. He emphasized the company’s philosophy of “ready when it’s ready,” indicating that the timeline is designed to ensure a polished product. “It’s not that far in advance if you look at when you need to deliver a game to get it out,” Zelnick explained. He also noted the importance of initiating marketing efforts well ahead of the release to provide consumers with as much certainty as possible.

Interestingly, the sales trajectory of GTA 5 continues to impress, with approximately 20 million copies sold in the past year alone. This figure marks a significant increase from the last reported sales of around 200 million units in May 2024. For context, while GTA 5’s sales are staggering, other games like Tetris have also reached remarkable numbers, albeit with different sales strategies.

However, the path to success has not been without its challenges. Recently, Rockstar Games faced criticism after the dismissal of over 30 employees linked to a Discord server focused on labor organization. The company stated that these terminations were due to “gross misconduct” and the leaking of confidential information, distancing itself from any implications of union-related activities. This incident has drawn sharp criticism from groups such as the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain, which labeled it as “the most brazen act of union busting the games industry has ever seen.”

As the gaming industry watches closely, Take-Two’s strategy and the eventual release of GTA 6 will be pivotal in shaping the company’s future and maintaining its stronghold in the market.
