Concerns Arise Over AI Influence in Upcoming Graveyard Keeper Sequel
The recent announcement of a sequel to the medieval cemetery management simulator, Graveyard Keeper, has sparked a wave of discussion among fans, particularly regarding the promotional artwork. Some players have expressed discomfort, suggesting that the new key art exhibits characteristics reminiscent of generative AI, leading to a deeper examination of the game’s development process.
One Reddit user, RottenRailing, voiced their concerns, stating, “The promo art looks very much like generative AI, and is an immediate turn-off. The OG art was charming, and certainly more unique!” This sentiment was echoed by others, prompting a discussion about the implications of AI in creative fields.
A thread initiated by user PotatoChaaaaps highlighted what they termed the “elephant in the room,” referencing Lazy Bear Games’ CTO and co-founder, Slava Cherkasov. Following the recent unveiling of DLSS 5, Cherkasov had been active on social media, sharing his enthusiasm for AI-generated content, including images inspired by Graveyard Keeper.
In response to the growing concerns, a user claiming to be Cherkasov addressed the Reddit thread, asserting, “You may not believe me, but we’re not using the AI in Graveyard Keeper 2. Yes, I’m experimenting with every AI model I can find. This is what every tech guy should do now.” While the identity of this user remains unverified, it has been suggested that they are associated with the “soulburner_spb” handle, known for posts from LazyBearGames.
Cherkasov further clarified his role, stating, “I’m constantly creating some small experimental projects that are not shared with the audience and have nothing to do with Graveyard Keeper. I’m not doing the art—we have about 8 artists for that. I’m not doing sound or music either. I’m just a tech guy that is experimenting with the tech to understand what it can do.”
Reactions from the gaming community have been varied. Reddit user Chelcherine expressed relief, saying, “I’m happy now,” while another user, darlawatters, remarked, “I’m pretty good at spotting AI and nothing about the trailer or art made me believe AI was being used. Folks are so quick to jump and assume.”
However, skepticism remains. User Mistbiene commented, “Yeah, doubt. I hope it’s true but I’ll wait for the final game and trailers before deciding to support it. He’s testing how much AI we are willing to tolerate in Graveyard Keeper specifically. It’s important that we keep up the firm anti-AI stance if a leader of the project is blatantly exploring it.”
