IllFonic, the studio behind the popular titles Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, is navigating a challenging landscape as it announces staff reductions. In a heartfelt message shared on LinkedIn, CEO and co-founder Charles Brungardt addressed the difficult decision, attributing it to the current state of the gaming industry.
Industry Challenges and Strategic Realignment
While Brungardt cited broader industry conditions as a contributing factor, many observers point to the studio’s latest release, Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game. Despite its initial promise, the title has struggled to maintain a robust player base, raising questions about its long-term viability. This contrasts sharply with the success of Friday the 13th: The Game, which IllFonic was forced to withdraw from sale after its licensing agreement expired.
“Today we had to accept the harsh reality that the state of the industry has impacted us here at IllFonic,” Brungardt expressed. “It is with the heaviest of hearts that cuts to our teams had to be made today as we realigned to a refined strategy.”
In light of these changes, Brungardt also extended a supportive hand to those affected, highlighting the considerable talent within the studio. He encouraged others in the industry to reach out if they have open positions, fostering connections for displaced team members.
