“I’m not going to recoup what I put into this for a long time,” says returning Hytale owner, who previously said he’d offered Riot 10x what the dead Minecraft-inspired game is worth

Simon Collins-Laflamme, the original developer of Hytale, has successfully reacquired the rights to the game following its abrupt discontinuation by Riot Games. Despite the renewed interest surrounding the Minecraft-like title, Collins-Laflamme remains realistic about the financial implications of this investment. He acknowledges that recouping his costs will not happen in the near future.

Challenges Ahead

In a recent social media update, Collins-Laflamme expressed his commitment to keeping the base price of Hytale as low as possible, aiming to make the game accessible to a wider audience. However, he faces challenges in determining an appropriate price point. Factors such as the buyback price, legal fees, and production costs complicate the equation.

Addressing concerns from fans, he stated, “I’m not going to recoup what I put into this for a long time, even with all the renewed attention, and that’s fine. Don’t worry about me; let’s take care of the team first.” This sentiment underscores his prioritization of the development team over immediate financial gain.

Interestingly, Riot Games had previously offered Collins-Laflamme ten times what Hytale’s “true market value” was at the time of the acquisition. While the exact terms of the deal remain undisclosed, it is clear that the transaction was not particularly generous. As a result, Collins-Laflamme is unlikely to see significant profits in the foreseeable future, unless Hytale achieves a level of success comparable to that of Minecraft.

In a light-hearted remark, Collins-Laflamme noted that the delay of another highly anticipated game, GTA 6, might provide Hytale with an opportunity to launch successfully. This optimism reflects his belief in the potential for Hytale to carve out its own niche in the gaming landscape.
