In the vibrant world of comic book narratives, the thrill of unexpected character mashups has long captivated audiences. From multiverse-shattering events to the playful banter of characters like Shadow the Hedgehog dismissing Darkseid as “pathetic,” the genre thrives on the collision of disparate heroes and villains. This same spirit of crossover excitement is mirrored in the realm of traditional fighting games, where iconic figures such as Ryu can be seen unleashing fireballs against the likes of the Hulk or Minecraft Steve.
Exploring Crossovers in Invincible VS
Currently, the superhero tag battler Invincible VS draws its inspiration exclusively from Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed Image comic series. However, there’s a growing desire among fans to see these characters engage in battles beyond their established universe. Imagine the formidable Battle Beast taking on none other than Spider-Man—a scenario that has sparked interest among the game’s developers. In a recent conversation with MMORPG.com, game director Dave Hall and lead combat designer Bau Bautista expressed enthusiasm for the idea of crossovers.
“We’re definitely not above that,” Hall remarked. “We’re always down for a crossover. I think it’s really exciting to think about, and let’s hope we can do some in the future, but nothing that we can talk about right now.”
As noted by MMORPG, there is indeed a precedent for such crossovers; Spider-Man has made appearances in Invincible comics, and the series itself is peppered with nods to various DC and Marvel characters. This context makes the potential for crossovers feel more like a natural evolution rather than a mere gimmick, unlike in other franchises such as Fortnite.
Hall and Bautista’s interest in guest characters extends beyond just the realm of Invincible. They have expressed admiration for the iconic characters from the Mortal Kombat franchise. “We’d love to have Sub-Zero and Scorpion! Bring them over, that’d be great,” Hall stated, with Bautista adding, “If we have that opportunity, we will definitely take it.” The possibility is not far-fetched, especially considering that Omni Man has already made a guest appearance in Mortal Kombat 1.
At present, Invincible VS is concentrating on characters native to the Image comic universe. Fans can look forward to the introduction of Immortal and Universa, set to join the game on June 30, coinciding with the launch of its first season.
