Recent studies have unveiled a more alarming connection: certain popular games, such as Minecraft and Fortnite, may inadvertently place children at risk for gambling-related behaviors. Heather Hugelmeyer, senior director for addiction services at Northwell Zucker Hillside Hospital, highlighted that many games incorporate loot boxes—virtual rewards that players can win or purchase—which can shape young minds and predispose them to gambling at an early age.

Young men, in particular, are at a greater risk due to the ongoing development of their prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for decision-making and impulse control. A recent poll indicated that 10% of men aged 18 to 30 exhibit signs of a gambling problem, a stark contrast to the 3% observed in the general population.

Exposure to gambling-like elements can manifest through various channels, including online ads, social media, and video games featuring loot boxes. In response to these concerns, the Entertainment Software Rating Board has introduced a new warning label for games that include such features. However, critics argue that this measure falls short, as lawsuits continue to emerge against video game developers accused of creating addictive experiences that exploit players.

While the official version of Minecraft does not sell loot boxes, some unofficial third-party servers have adopted this practice. Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, faced scrutiny over similar allegations, ultimately settling with the Federal Trade Commission for 5 million in 2022. The company maintains that it has eliminated pay-to-win mechanics and random-item loot boxes from its games.

Beyond video games, the normalization of gambling through sports shows that display betting lines can also pose risks. Hugelmeyer pointed out that an entire generation is growing up with gambling being a commonplace aspect of their entertainment landscape, which could have significant repercussions. The ease of online betting further compounds this issue, creating a precarious environment for young individuals.

Tips for parents to recognize gambling behavior

  • Avoid normalizing gambling: Be cautious about presenting gambling as a casual activity at home. Refrain from giving scratch-off tickets as gifts or encouraging your child to bet on sports.
  • Monitor competitive behavior: Take note if your teen suddenly becomes overly focused on winning or competition.
  • Watch for financial red flags: Keep an eye out for missing household money, unexplained charges, or excessive credit card debt. Be aware if your teen asks to borrow money for gambling.
  • Be vigilant about gaming habits: Pay attention to whether your child plays games with loot boxes or in-game purchases. Inquire about any attempts to use your credit for these transactions.
  • Observe changes in attitude: Notice any significant shifts in your teen’s engagement with school or activities, particularly if they are missing classes or assignments. Look for behavioral changes such as increased anger, anxiety, or depression.

Hugelmeyer emphasized that while these warning signs do not definitively indicate a gambling problem, they warrant discussion about the risks and consequences associated with gambling. “As parents, our influence is paramount,” she stated. “By fostering open conversations, we create opportunities for our children to approach us if they encounter issues.”
