In a surprising turn of events following the monumental success of A Minecraft Movie, which amassed nearly billion globally, Kirsten Dunst has expressed her desire to join the franchise. The Oscar-nominated actress revealed her enthusiasm for a role in the upcoming sequel from Warner Bros, driven by her children’s fondness for the original film adaptation of the popular video game.
Dunst humorously remarked, “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” during an interview with Town & Country, highlighting her interest in being part of a financially successful project.
Director’s Vision for the Sequel
Director Jared Hess has previously shared his excitement about the prospect of a sequel, stating that it “would be so much fun.” The first film’s record-breaking box office performance, which launched in April and became Warner Bros’ third largest opening of all time, has certainly set the stage for further exploration of the Minecraft universe.
“We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game,” Hess explained. “There were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
As the narrative unfolds, Hess has hinted at the introduction of “the other massively critical character” from the game, Alex, in the sequel. “It’s Steve (Jack Black) and Alex, and that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt,” he noted, creating anticipation among fans.
While Kate McKinnon voiced Alex in a brief appearance, the character’s face was not shown, leaving room for speculation about Dunst potentially stepping into the role, perhaps even reviving her iconic MJ red hair from her previous work.
Dunst’s last theatrical release was Alex Garland’s Civil War (2024), which achieved an impressive 7 million worldwide, marking A24’s best opening ever at .7 million. With a career that began at the tender age of six, Dunst’s highest-grossing film remains Spider-Man 3 (2007), which grossed 2 million globally.
