Marathon players are amassing way too much loot in Season 2, and the primary cause is a mystery: ‘We’re still unravelling the source’

Season 2 of Marathon commenced earlier this month, ushering in a wave of excitement and challenges for players. The launch, however, was marred by Bungie’s customary technical hiccups, which somewhat overshadowed the initial free-to-play week. Yet, the introduction of new features, particularly the Night-time Dire Marsh map and the Sponsored Survival mode, quickly captured the community’s enthusiasm.

Progression Issues Arise

As the weeks progressed, new complications began to surface. The core issue? An unexpected ease in player progression that stands in stark contrast to the game’s historically challenging nature. In Season 1, players often felt fortunate to extract valuable loot, but Season 2 has seen an influx of treasures, leaving many players with overflowing vaults and a disrupted in-game economy.

Bungie addressed these concerns in a recent Steam post, acknowledging the rapid progression and access to power that has outpaced the previous season. “Out of the gate in Season 2, progression and access to power moved much faster than the previous season,” the developer noted. They provided context, revealing that the average wealth accumulated by players in the second week of Season 2 mirrors what was typically seen in weeks 11 and 12 of Season 1. While the intention was to enhance progression speeds, the outcome has not aligned with the game’s health.

In exploring the root causes of this imbalance, Bungie identified a combination of factors. Initially, several bugs contributed to the issue, including “guaranteed gold drops in places that shouldn’t have them.” The early influx of Sponsored Kits also accelerated player progression, compounded by a lucrative chest in the Complex Control area and the grind associated with Sponsored Survival, allowing players to exploit the game’s PvE mode effectively.

Despite these findings, the primary cause of the excessive loot remains somewhat elusive. Bungie reported an issue with the proliferation of higher rarity loot throughout the game, though the exact source is still under investigation. “This isn’t something we’ve seen in our internal playtests, and we’re still unravelling the source,” they stated, adding an air of curiosity to the situation.

In response to these challenges, Bungie has implemented temporary adjustments to progression, such as disabling boosted containers and reducing Cradle XP rates. However, these measures are not permanent; the developer plans to reinstate previous conditions later in the season once more sustainable solutions are identified. For now, players may appreciate the slightly easier journey on Tau Ceti IV, even if it’s just a brief reprieve.
