On Saturday, May 3, the vibrant City of New York showcased the Bronx Semi-Finals for the highly anticipated 2025 Minecraft Education Battle of the Boroughs (BOTB) Esports Competition. This event marks a significant milestone in the realm of educational esports, reflecting the growing enthusiasm among students and educators alike.
Participation Surge
The 2025 competition has garnered an impressive 659 submissions from 3,295 students, representing a remarkable 37% increase from the previous year’s participation of 2,400 students, and a staggering 135% rise compared to 2023, which saw 1,400 participants. This surge underscores the increasing popularity of esports as a dynamic educational tool.
Determining the Finalists
During the semi-finals, each borough is tasked with selecting three teams: one from grades K-5, one from grades 6-8, and one from grades 9-12. These teams will advance to compete for the coveted Mayor’s Cup on May 31, 2025.

- 175 students representing 35 teams from over 26 schools across the Bronx, including last year’s champions from PS 100.
