In a significant legal development, Casey Henderson, a mother from Maine, has initiated a lawsuit against Microsoft and the developers behind some of the most widely played video games for children, including Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft. The suit, filed on Tuesday, alleges that these gaming companies have incorporated features designed to be addictive, all while neglecting to implement adequate safety measures to protect young users.
Allegations of Addiction and Impact on Youth
The lawsuit asserts that the games are deliberately marketed to children, utilizing mechanisms that encourage prolonged engagement to enhance the likelihood of in-game purchases. Henderson claims that her 9-year-old child has experienced a range of adverse effects, including diminished social interactions, a disinterest in other hobbies, and withdrawal symptoms characterized by rage, anger, and physical outbursts.
According to the legal filing, attempts to limit the child’s gaming time have resulted in severe withdrawal symptoms, manifesting as anger and a refusal to adhere to basic hygiene or sleep routines. “The most important thing is to hold these manufacturers accountable for their actions,” stated attorney Brett Dwight Baber, who is representing Henderson. He emphasized that these companies have intentionally embedded psychological triggers within their games to maximize playtime, ultimately profiting from the addiction they foster.
The lawsuit seeks monetary relief, claiming that Henderson has endured injuries and damages exceeding ,000. As of now, none of the defendants have responded to requests for comment regarding the allegations made in this case.
