During a recent conversation with Tonda Ros, the creative mind behind the acclaimed puzzle game Blue Prince, the excitement surrounding the game was palpable. Having experienced a captivating 20-minute demo back in March 2024, it’s clear that Blue Prince has left an indelible mark on many players, including myself. As one of the standout titles of the year, it has sparked curiosity about its future.
Future Prospects for Blue Prince
With the trend of transforming popular games into films and television series, I couldn’t help but inquire whether Ros had received any offers for a cinematic adaptation of Blue Prince. The game’s rich narrative and intricate mysteries seem ripe for exploration on the big screen. However, Ros shared that while he has indeed been approached, he is not currently considering such a venture. “To me, Blue Prince is this one game or this one piece of art in the medium of games. I couldn’t really imagine it as anything else,” he explained.
Ros, who has a background in filmmaking, expressed his aspirations in that realm but emphasized that each of his projects will stand alone. “I don’t ever plan on making a sequel to Blue Prince, either,” he stated. “I think that each project I make, in whatever medium, will largely be unconnected.” This approach reflects his commitment to originality and artistic integrity.
Yet, there remains a flicker of hope for fans eager to delve deeper into the expansive universe of Blue Prince. The game is rich with lore, including the histories of various nations, political tensions, and a detailed family lineage for its protagonist. Ros hinted at the possibility of exploring different narratives within this broader world, albeit without a direct connection to Blue Prince itself. “That’s not to say I won’t necessarily tell a different story in a different genre that takes place in the greater world that Blue Prince takes place in,” he noted. “It won’t actually be related to Blue Prince directly, and it certainly won’t bear the Blue Prince title.”
Ros acknowledged the allure of sequels, particularly given the success of Blue Prince, but he is determined to forge his own path. “It would be very easy for me to do Blue Prince 2, based on how successful Blue Prince is. But for me, I think that is a trap that a lot of people go into because it’s safer,” he remarked. He understands the pressures indie and larger studios face regarding sustainability, which often leads to the safer choice of sequels.
So, what lies ahead for Ros? He revealed that during the development of Blue Prince, he conceived several promising ideas, including a multiplayer puzzle game and a metroidvania concept. However, he remains undecided on which direction to take next. “I have a lot of candidates,” he shared, “and certainly nothing that I could tease yet, because I’m not sure which one I’m going to go into. But they are wildly different genres than each other.”
