Crafting Systems in RPGs: A Closer Look at Avowed’s Evolution
In the realm of role-playing games (RPGs), crafting systems often evoke mixed feelings among players. While some titles manage to create engaging and tactile experiences, many fall into the trap of tedious busywork. A notable exception is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which has garnered praise for its alchemy and blacksmithing mechanics. However, the recent launch of Avowed has highlighted the challenges that can arise when crafting becomes a mandatory aspect of gameplay.
At its inception, Avowed’s upgrade system faced considerable criticism. Players were required to gather upgrade materials to maintain their favorite weapons and armor as they ventured into new territories. Unlike many RPGs where crafting is an optional feature, Avowed made it a necessity, leading to frustration among those eager to explore.
As noted by RPG Site, the development team aimed to create a seamless gameplay loop: players complete content, enhance their gear, and tackle increasingly difficult challenges. However, the open-world design inadvertently hindered exploration, as players found themselves stymied by the upgrade requirements.
In response to community feedback, Obsidian Entertainment has implemented significant changes in the recent anniversary update. Paramo, a representative from the studio, acknowledged the initial concerns regarding the game’s economy. Players expressed dissatisfaction with the rapid pace at which they encountered content, the lack of diverse gear options, and the steep prices of equipment in stores. The upgrade system’s demand for resources felt overwhelming, leaving many feeling underprepared for the challenges ahead.
To address these issues, Obsidian has refined the progression system, allowing players to engage with it at their own pace. The friction that once characterized the experience has been notably reduced, resulting in a more gradual progression curve. This enhancement is largely attributed to the introduction of custom difficulty modifiers, which not only empower characters and companions but also enable players to adjust broader game elements, such as merchant prices and upgrade material costs.
The changes mean that acquiring useful gear will be more accessible, while upgrading that gear will no longer feel like an arduous task. Furthermore, the addition of workbenches scattered throughout the game world eliminates the need for players to return to camp to enhance their equipment, streamlining the overall crafting experience.
With the anniversary update now live, players can explore these improvements firsthand, marking a significant evolution in Avowed’s crafting and progression systems.
