Upon its release last year, Doom: The Dark Ages captured my attention, yet I found myself grappling with the expectation of adoration. The previous entries in id’s modern trilogy, particularly the first two installments, are often hailed as generational masterpieces in the first-person shooter (FPS) genre. They are celebrated for their exhilarating action, an arsenal of unforgettable weapons, and climactic battles that leave players breathless.
The essence of these earlier games lay in their embrace of speed, hyper-mobility, and the art of improvisational gun swapping. These elements created a fluid gameplay experience that resonated deeply with fans. However, The Dark Ages took a different approach, introducing a shield mechanic that shifted the focus away from the frenetic pace that defined its predecessors.
The Slayer’s shield, while an intriguing addition, served as a multifunctional tool. It provided the ability to block incoming damage, parry specific attacks, and even function as a projectile to dispatch lesser foes. Yet, this innovation came at a significant cost: the gameplay’s inherent mobility and complexity were compromised. In this new framework, the strategy shifted; encounters became less about dynamic movement and more about timing defensive maneuvers and delivering powerful shotgun blasts to vanquish adversaries. While the shield offered a novel gameplay experience, it inadvertently altered the core identity of what made Doom so exhilarating.
