Indie games newsletter Pantaloon has taken a significant step forward by launching a new publishing label, expanding its influence in the gaming industry. This new venture currently boasts two intriguing titles: the narrative-driven game Sub-Verge and an innovative Solitaire project named Occlude.
Embracing Unconventionality
Originally known as a resource hub for indie developers, Pantaloon has cultivated a robust community, amassing nearly 30,000 subscribers to its newsletter. Founder Jamin Smith acknowledges the crowded landscape of indie publishing, stating, “The world probably doesn’t need another indie publisher.” However, he emphasizes that Pantaloon’s approach is rooted in a unique philosophy.
Smith elaborates on their vision, which prioritizes both awareness and support for development partners. “With an existing awareness platform and terms that give novel agency and security to development partners, we then seek to actively court risk,” he explains. The aim is to discover and promote games that venture into uncharted territories, exploring peculiar or experimental genres that traditional publishers might overlook.
The label’s motto, “A home for misfits,” resonates deeply with its mission. It serves not merely as a catchy phrase but as a rallying cry for games that defy conventional publishing norms. Pantaloon is committed to providing a nurturing environment for creative minds, encouraging them to push boundaries and explore new horizons in game design.
As Pantaloon embarks on this new chapter, it stands poised to make a meaningful impact in the indie game landscape, championing the unconventional and celebrating the artistry of games that dare to be different.
