After over a decade of championing the enthusiast community, Grinding Gear Games is setting its sights on making Path of Exile 2 as accessible as its competitors, such as Diablo 4. Historically, the game has been perceived as daunting due to its vast complexity—ranging from intricate passive skill trees with thousands of nodes to elaborate crafting systems that span a diverse endgame. The recent PoE 2 0.5 update, titled Return of the Ancients, marks a significant transformation, introducing the most substantial change since the game’s inception in 2013.
Enhanced In-Game Guidance
With the Return of the Ancients update, players can now access build guides directly within the game. This feature begins by illustrating the optimal path through the expansive skill forest, but its utility extends far beyond that. Skill gems can be prioritized, and support gems are categorized into a dedicated tab for easy reference. By hovering over inventory slots, players receive tailored tips on what to seek, including the hierarchy of importance for item stats. This dynamic system adapts as players progress, ensuring that guidance remains relevant throughout their journey.
This enhancement is a remarkable boon for newcomers to action RPGs. While some may prefer to dive in without external advice, the intimidation factor can be overwhelming. Now, players can easily discern their next steps without the hassle of juggling multiple browser tabs or relying on third-party tools like Path of Building. Additionally, for those who enjoy creating their own builds, this feature allows for quick in-game references without distraction.
Speaking of Path of Building, a favored tool for theorycrafting and testing PoE builds, its developers are already gearing up to leverage the new in-game integration. “Such a great feature,” remarked developer ‘LocalIdentity,’ who confirmed that an update will be rolled out before the league launch to enhance compatibility.
Competitive Edge
This update not only enhances the experience for Path of Exile players but may also position it ahead of Diablo 4. While the skill trees in Diablo 4 are straightforward enough to navigate without guidance, the endgame’s Paragon boards can quickly become a sea of numbers. As someone who frequently explores various games, I often rely on expert-designed Paragon layouts, which necessitates constant switching between browser tabs.
Path of Exile 2 retains its complex systems, but Grinding Gear Games is committed to making them more intuitive. Although the expansive endgame upgrade in Return of the Ancients may initially appear daunting, the segmentation of mechanics into specific zones, coupled with dedicated quests for each, offers players a structured way to learn the intricacies of each system.
In a conversation with Game Director Jonathan Rogers prior to the update reveal, he expressed optimism about the new quests enhancing endgame accessibility. “It’s non-linear, as there are various objectives to tackle in any order, but if players want to complete all the pinnacles, we can guide them on exactly what to do,” he explained.
Streamlined Crafting Mechanics
On the crafting front, GGG has linked specific materials to each mechanic, simplifying the planning process for players. For instance, if players desire superior jewels, they will need to engage in Delirium, and build guide creators can easily remind them of this requirement. “By restricting each league to crafting item slots, we limit the amount of content players need to engage with simultaneously,” Rogers noted.
When all these elements come together, Path of Exile 2 emerges as one of the most approachable entries in the series, potentially surpassing many of its contemporaries. Rogers mentioned that Grinding Gear Games “strived to incorporate all the functionalities that players might need” for the 0.5 update, with aspirations to introduce even more features as they aim for a 1.0 launch by the end of 2026.
