PayPal pulls Steam support for most currencies

Valve has announced a significant change regarding payment processing on its Steam platform, revealing that PayPal is no longer facilitating transactions in numerous countries. This update was shared on Valve’s Purchasing Issues Q&A page, where the company detailed the circumstances leading to this development.

Details of the Payment Processing Changes

In early July, Valve received notification from PayPal that its acquiring bank had ceased processing Steam transactions in various currencies. As it stands, Valve can only accept PayPal payments in a limited selection of currencies, specifically:

  • Euros
  • Canadian Dollars
  • British Pounds
  • Japanese Yen
  • Australian Dollars
  • US Dollars

Valve expressed hope for a future where PayPal could be reinstated as a payment option for additional currencies, although the timeline for this remains uncertain. The company is also exploring the possibility of introducing alternative payment methods on Steam to accommodate the customers affected by these changes.

In a statement provided to Rock Paper Shotgun, Valve clarified that the withdrawal of support from PayPal’s acquiring bank is linked to content available on the platform, which aligns with previous comments made regarding Mastercard. This shift comes in the wake of a campaign led by the anti-pornography group Collective Shout, which has targeted platforms like Steam and Itch.io over their NSFW game content by disrupting their payment processing capabilities.
