Google Introduces Gemini Live to Android Gaming with Play Games Sidekick
Google has announced the launch of Gemini Live for Android gaming through Play Games Sidekick. This feature, described as a coach, provides a helpful in-game overlay that is accessible while playing games downloaded from Play.
In supported games, users will see a new handle that can be dragged to either side of the screen or dismissed and accessed from notifications.
The overlay panel supports both landscape and portrait orientation and includes a link to the user’s profile and Play Points. Additionally, there is a grid for taking screenshots, screen recording, streaming to YouTube, and enabling Do Not Disturb.
Enhanced Gaming Experience
Furthermore, there is a prominent “Start Gemini Live” button that launches the assistant and allows users to start sharing their screen. Inline controls enable users to mute the microphone and end the session. Users can ask for assistance about the game, with Gemini providing context-aware guidance, tips, tricks, and support without the need to leave the game for external resources.
During a demo with “The Battle of Polytopia,” Google showcased the capabilities of Sidekick, highlighting the collaboration between Google Play and the Google DeepMind team. Gemini can reason about the game solely based on the on-screen actions.
AI-Powered Game Tips
The “Game Tips” feature in Sidekick is powered by AI and tailored to the user’s gameplay. Additionally, there are carousels for Achievements, Streaks, Quests, Coupons (Play Points), Play Credit (redeemable inline), and Boosts.
Google plans to roll out Play Games Sidekick with Gemini Live in select games over the coming months. The company is also launching a “Level Up” program for game developers, offering various benefits for supporting the latest platform features, including Sidekick, with a deadline for support set for July 2026.
Developers are encouraged to integrate capabilities like cloud save and seamless restore by November 2026 to enhance the gaming experience for users.
