The ongoing dispute between Playdead founders Dino Patti and Arnt Jensen has taken a public turn, centering around intellectual property concerns that date back to a now-removed LinkedIn post from 2024. In this post, Patti shared an image that was originally owned by Jensen, prompting the latter to demand DKK 500,000 (approximately ,600) in what he describes as “suitable compensation and reimbursement,” as reported by Game Developer.
Legal Correspondence and Allegations
Jensen’s legal team has issued a stern warning, asserting that Patti’s continued use of Playdead’s assets, along with any disclosure of confidential information for commercial gain, constitutes a breach of confidentiality agreements. This was articulated in a letter that Patti subsequently shared on LinkedIn, which described the situation as a “legal love letter.” The correspondence emphasized that by sharing insights into the development of the critically acclaimed game Limbo, Patti was misleading others into believing he had a more significant creative role in its inception than he actually did.
In response to the allegations, Patti has accused Jensen of attempting to “bully” him, which he cites as a reason for bringing the matter to light publicly. This revelation adds a layer of complexity to an already contentious situation.
Playdead’s Position
In a statement to Game Developer, Playdead clarified that they have formally addressed their concerns to Patti regarding what they view as infringement and unauthorized use of the studio’s trademarks and copyrighted materials in a commercial context. The studio emphasized the necessity of these actions to safeguard their intellectual property, which they consider vital to both their business operations and their reputation in the industry.
Founded in 2010, Playdead has garnered acclaim for its two iconic indie titles, Limbo and Inside. However, the relationship between Patti and Jensen soured, leading to Patti’s departure from the studio in 2016 amidst reports of internal discord.
