League of Legends Classic has recently made its debut in Riot Games’ public test environment, stirring a blend of excitement and skepticism among the gaming community. This new mode offers a nostalgic twist on the popular MOBA by significantly reducing the champion roster and reintroducing various character builds and kits from 2013 and earlier.
Mixed Reactions to Classic Mode
Upon its launch, the mode has garnered a mixed reception, primarily due to its visual presentation. Players were greeted with modern character models, voiceovers, and spell effects by default. However, “classic skins” could be unlocked through earned tokens or purchased with real money. This approach has led to some discontent, as highlighted by a user named prime_desire on the League of Legends subreddit, who described the mode as “League ‘not so’ Classic.” The post, which received over 6,000 upvotes, criticized the decision to charge for classic skins, calling it “genuinely wild.”
In response to the feedback, Riot Games acknowledged the concerns. A representative stated in a video blog on July 16, “Feedback received.” They noted that players on the public test environment would find that all classic skins are now unlocked for champions that have them, and these skins have been set as the default appearance, replacing the modern visuals.
Clarifying the Design Choices
Riot also addressed the criticism surrounding the mode’s “greatest hits” approach. Instead of adhering to a single historical patch, the developers opted to blend elements from various patches to cater to a broader audience. The rationale behind this decision stems from player surveys that revealed a wide array of preferences. According to Riot, “The answers were almost identical. League was classic the year they started playing, League was best the year after they started, and League was too old before they started.” This insight reflects the diverse experiences players have had with the game over the years.
As the mode transitions to standard servers, Riot plans to implement changes based on player votes regarding new patches, indicating that community input will play a significant role in shaping the future of League of Legends Classic.
