Sci-fi survival game Once Human’s got a new set of dangerous creatures, and one will haunt my nightmares for weeks

In the ever-evolving landscape of gaming, few titles manage to capture the imagination quite like Once Human. This free-to-play sci-fi survival game, while not boasting the peak player counts it once did, has maintained a loyal following thanks to regular updates and innovative gameplay mechanics. The latest upgrade introduces a trio of new adversaries, including the unsettling biomechanical Devourer, which is sure to leave a lasting impression on players.

New Threats in Once Human

The Devourer, a creature that cleverly masquerades as a subway train, stretches an impressive 45 meters in length. According to the update, “The internal rail transit vehicles on Nalcott Island range in height from 2.88 to 3.68 meters and in width from 2.6 to 2.9 meters,” a detail that underscores the potential hazards posed by any rail vehicle exceeding these dimensions. While the Devourer is primarily docile and poses little threat to humans or animals, its appetite for Stardust-enriched ores makes it a formidable presence in operational workshops. Players must contend with its vast, pulsating maw that voraciously consumes anything not secured, complete with arms that add an extra layer of surrealism to this already bizarre entity.

For the daring, there is an opportunity to interact with the Devourer by feeding it minerals and attempting to inflict enough damage to prompt it to regurgitate upgraded resources. However, failure to do so before it becomes satisfied could result in the creature burrowing underground, taking valuable materials with it.

In addition to the Devourer, players will encounter the Hoarder, a quirky fusion of mannequins and supermarket carts influenced by Stardust. This creature, resembling a shopping cart on legs, scuttles about collecting items and resources. Observing its movements can lead players to its nest, where several Hoarders store their treasures. However, attempting to raid their stash may provoke their wrath, making it wise to tread carefully.

The third new foe, the Sonivore, presents a unique challenge. This gel-like entity, composed of nanoscale magnetic particles and Black Water, manifests as a translucent blob with a dark, magnetic core. It has a penchant for sound and high-value supplies, and should it set its sights on a player, the struggle to escape its grasp can be intense. Fortunately, players can use sound distractions, such as thrown objects or explosions, to divert its attention.

Alongside these intriguing new threats, the latest season of Once Human introduces two new weapons: the fire-based EBR-14 rifle and the TEC-9, as well as a fresh gear set and additional mod affixes. Notably, the update also features the Deviant Sprout upgrade path, allowing players to transform their characters using Deviant parts and harness their powers.

The Once Human Aberrant Progeny update launches Wednesday, January 21. Players can immerse themselves in this thrilling experience for free on Steam.
