Last year, Brian, the solo developer behind Burgee Media, embarked on a journey to create an MMORPG experience that he longed for during his EverQuest days, hindered by a less-than-stellar internet connection. This vision materialized in the form of Erenshor, which was released in early access on Steam. Unlike traditional MMOs, Erenshor offers a fully simulated single-player environment, featuring a plethora of quests, expansive zones, and computer-controlled “simplayers” that engage in group activities, form guilds, and embark on loot hunts.
Success in Early Access
The reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with Erenshor currently enjoying a remarkable 94% positive review rating. As the game continues to evolve, players can anticipate exciting new content, including endgame challenges designed for both human players and their simulated counterparts. This summer, Erenshor will introduce raids, enhancing the gameplay experience.
Brian has expressed a certain intrigue in the dynamics of MMO behavior, particularly the darker aspects that can emerge in competitive environments. While he previously noted that maladaptive behaviors in simulated players could be amusing to envision but not enjoyable in practice, he has since reconsidered this perspective. In a recent patch, Burgee Media introduced the “Friends Club,” a guild of simplayers characterized by their elitist attitudes and mild toxicity, reminiscent of real-world MMO guilds.
Raid Dynamics and Future Updates
In correspondence with PC Gamer, Brian emphasized that while he aims to avoid “truly bad simplayer behavior,” the Friends Club is expected to stir up some raid drama with the upcoming summer update. Although the antics may not reach the level of human interpersonal conflicts, they promise to add a layer of excitement to the gameplay.
Players can look forward to the thrill of endgame loot without the typical scheduling demands and social pressures associated with traditional MMOs. Additionally, Burgee Media has teased that a fifth and final raid will be included in a future update, marking the last significant content release before the game’s anticipated 1.0 launch.
While the exact release date for the raid update remains unannounced, players eager to dive into this unique MMO experience can start exploring Erenshor on Steam today.
