Sins of a Solar Empire 2 gets a massive diplomacy overhaul that makes wars ‘economically ruinous’

Ironclad Games continues to nourish the community of Sins of a Solar Empire 2 enthusiasts with a steady stream of updates and downloadable content since the game’s launch late last year. Over the past twelve months, players have witnessed the introduction of various enhancements, including new scenarios, refined population mechanics, improved tutorials, and visually appealing debris effects that enrich the aftermath of battles.

Enhancing Diplomatic Engagement

The latest update, aptly named the Diplomatic Repercussions, focuses on refining one of the real-time strategy genre’s most challenging elements—diplomacy. This overhaul aims to transform negotiation into a more engaging and viable route to victory. As detailed in a recent video by Ironclad, a substantial reworking of the artificial intelligence underpins this enhancement. Non-player character factions have been reprogrammed to exhibit greater intelligence and friendliness, increasing their propensity to forge alliances and forgive previous conflicts. However, should diplomatic efforts falter, these factions have also become more tactically astute on the battlefield.

Players can now leverage these diplomatic changes through a revamped diplomacy menu, which displays critical modifiers affecting their proposals. This includes insights into how likely a faction is to accept an offer and the potential impacts on research and relationship status. Additionally, players can trade influence points as a resource during negotiations or utilize them to acquire intelligence about a faction’s progression.

The update also introduces several new quick-start options, allowing players to commence their journey with an array of planets, fleets, and other bonuses. The research and tech-tree menus have undergone a redesign aimed at minimizing clutter and enhancing readability. To further enliven the game world, Ironclad has added decorative orbital shuttles that transport between planets, adding a touch of flair to the galaxy.

These improvements are poised to address concerns raised by players, including our resident galactic strategist Fraser Brown, who previously noted that diplomacy often felt lacking in significance. In his review of Sins of a Solar Empire 2, he remarked on the AI’s disinterest in engaging with the existing system, even when presented with generous offers. Despite this critique, he acknowledged the game’s brilliance, particularly in its execution of warfare, stating, “When it comes to pure war, nobody does it better.”
