Tango founder Mikami “surprised” by studio closure

Shinji Mikami, the visionary founder of Tango Gameworks, expressed his astonishment at Microsoft’s recent decision to shutter the studio. In a candid conversation with IGN, the esteemed Japanese game developer revealed his belief that the studio’s future was secure as long as it continued to produce titles in the Hi-Fi Rush series. This conviction played a significant role in his decision to part ways with Tango Gameworks.

Reflections on Change

“I had thought the studio would be safe as long as they continued to make Hi-Fi Rush games,” Mikami remarked. “That’s one of the reasons I left Tango Gameworks. So I was surprised when the studio was closed down.” Despite the unexpected turn of events, Mikami expressed optimism about the studio’s future under new ownership.

With the acquisition of Tango Gameworks and the Hi-Fi Rush intellectual property by the South Korean gaming giant Krafton, Mikami feels a sense of relief and satisfaction. “Now Krafton has taken over the business, so I feel like it worked out well in the end,” he noted. “I was reminded that if you make a good game, someone will pick it up. The hard work of the Hi-Fi Rush development team led to a new chapter for the company.”

Mikami emphasized the importance of quality in game development, stating, “I think that for a development studio, making a good game is more directly related to survival than making a popular game.” His insights reflect a deep understanding of the industry’s dynamics and the value of creativity and craftsmanship in ensuring longevity and success.

Having departed from Tango Gameworks in February 2023, Mikami’s journey continues, leaving behind a legacy that underscores the significance of passion and dedication in the gaming world.
