Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Devil Daggers, Hyper Demon is characterized by its mesmerizing art style and a focus on fast-paced, high-stakes shooting. However, this title shifts the narrative from mere survival to embodying an aggressive force reminiscent of Doom Eternal.
Gameplay Dynamics
In her review, Sam Greer awarded Hyper Demon an impressive score of 95, describing the experience as “virtually, and visually, euphoric.” She elaborated on the exhilarating heights players can achieve with each power-up and enemy vanquished, noting how the dark landscape envelops the player’s vision. “One small misstep can still end you,” she cautioned, “but for a few fleeting seconds, you are unstoppable.”
The PvP mode of Hyper Demon pits two players against each other, each taking on the form of biblically accurate angels, on a shimmering disc of energy suspended in a boundless void. A charged shot can be unleashed by holding down the fire button, expending all daggers in a single devastating attack. Alternatively, firing with just one dagger left results in a piercing shot capable of shattering an opponent’s shield.

While the fundamentals of Hyper Demon are straightforward, players will discover a surprising depth to the gameplay. This became evident as I faced off against a handful of friendly players online, quickly realizing that mastering the timing of attacks and blocks is no easy feat. The unique mechanic of time slowing when players draw near adds an extra layer of complexity, often leaving me momentarily disoriented.
Fortunately, newcomers are not left to navigate this challenging landscape alone. The game offers a comprehensive tutorial and the option to practice against a CPU opponent, making the learning curve more manageable. However, players should be mindful of the distinctive visual style, as those prone to motion sickness may want to approach with caution. For anyone seeking a compact competitive shooter experience, especially after exhausting the maps of Straftat, Hyper Demon PvP is undoubtedly a worthy contender.
