This “AI-Generated Game” Blatantly Rips Off Minecraft
The keenest observers among our readership may have discerned a subtle yet significant detail regarding Oasis, a project that has stirred quite the conversation in the gaming community. For those well-versed in open-source intelligence (OSINT), it becomes apparent that Oasis bears an uncanny resemblance to Mojang’s beloved Minecraft. Indeed, it is accurate to say that this so-called “first AI-generated game” is essentially a direct imitation of the iconic sandbox experience.
Oasis has emerged from an extensive training process involving thousands of hours of Minecraft gameplay and user interactions, resulting in a product that mirrors its predecessor in visual style, user interface, gameplay mechanics, fonts, visual effects, and animations. However, it is worth noting that Oasis introduces a peculiar element not found in Minecraft: AI hallucinations. Players who have ventured into this new realm report an experience marked by instability, with environments frequently shifting into unexpected forms when not directly observed. This characteristic positions Oasis more as a proof of concept than a fully realized game, a sentiment echoed by its creators who refer to it as a “technical demo.”
Absence of Acknowledgment
Despite the overt similarities, what is perhaps most perplexing is the conspicuous absence of any mention of Minecraft in the developers’ technical documentation and announcements. As of this writing, the term “Minecraft” is notably absent from Eteched’s statements, Decart’s communications, the project’s comprehensive technical report, and its GitHub repository. While the resemblance to Minecraft is glaringly obvious, the omission of its name raises eyebrows and invites scrutiny.
The developers of Oasis envision their creation as a foundational step toward a future where AI-generated games become a norm. They assert that “this research is only the beginning of a new journey involving more complex foundation models that enable real-time human-AI interaction on a new level.” However, given that this initiative relies heavily on the extensive video documentation of an existing game, such optimism about the future warrants careful consideration. As is often the case in the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, the ultimate outcome remains uncertain.
We invite you to share your perspectives on Oasis. Is it a groundbreaking technological advancement, a harbinger of future developments, an egregious infringement on copyright, or perhaps something that straddles the line between these interpretations?
