At the recent Tokyo Games Show, game director Naoki Yoshida and community producer Toshio Murouchi took to the stage to unveil the details of FF14 patch 7.35. This update, set to launch on Tuesday, October 7, represents a significant milestone for the beloved MMORPG, as it serves as the final chapter before the narrative shifts towards the next expansion. The patch is not only pivotal in the storyline but also acts as a testing ground for innovative mechanics that will shape the future of the game.
Key Features of Patch 7.35
The presentation, streamed live by Square Enix, resembled a typical Final Fantasy 14 Live Letter, offering fans a comprehensive look at what to expect. Among the highlights is the much-anticipated crossover with Monster Hunter, where players will face off against the formidable Guardian Arkveld. The patch also introduces the new Pilgrim’s Traverse deep dungeon, the Yok Huy allied society quotes, and the continuation of the beloved Hildibrand Adventures.
Yoshida emphasized the importance of Pilgrim’s Traverse, encouraging players to explore its variable difficulty features. He noted, “If you are interested in what is going to come for the future of Final Fantasy 14, then Pilgrim’s Traverse will be the best spot to give it a try,” indicating its role as a precursor to future developments.
Monster Hunter Collaboration
The collaboration with Capcom’s Monster Hunter was a focal point of the presentation, with Ryozo Tsujimoto joining the duo on stage. To engage in this thrilling encounter, players must reach level 100 and complete the 7.0 Dawntrail MSQ, with a required average item level of 725 for The Windward Wilds trial. The extreme version raises the bar to item level 740, both designed for groups of eight, though custom parties of any size are permitted.
Yoshida shared insights into the collaborative efforts between the FF14 and Monster Hunter development teams, noting the challenges in merging the mechanics of both games. He hinted at a shift towards “personal responsibility” in the Arkveld battle, reminiscent of the Stormblood fight against Rathalos, which aligns with the typical gameplay style of Monster Hunter enthusiasts.
Rewards and Customization
In addition to the previously revealed rewards, new items were showcased, including armor designs that remain faithful to the Wilds aesthetic, free from gender restrictions. Weapons will feature both base and augmented versions, allowing players to acquire them from the normal-difficulty fight for cosmetic purposes. Notably, some job-weapon pairings may raise eyebrows, such as the Black Mage wielding a Hammer and the Warrior using a transformed Charge Blade.
Players can also look forward to unique mounts, including a medical cart reminiscent of the one used when characters faint in battle, along with adorable minions and an array of house furnishings. Yoshida teased the introduction of framer’s kits, fashion accessories, and orchestrion rolls featuring five new songs.
Gameplay Insights
During the live demonstration, Yoshida and his team tackled the Arkveld fight, showcasing the mechanics in real-time. While familiar with the intricacies, the other participants were new to the encounter, adding an element of unpredictability. The battle featured ‘rolling wave’ AoEs, requiring players to adapt quickly to overlapping attacks. Despite initial challenges, the team successfully defeated Arkveld on their second attempt, suggesting that players accustomed to regular raids will find the normal difficulty manageable.
Post-battle, players will have the opportunity to carve Arkveld for additional rewards, and Yoshida provided a sneak peek at the armor’s dye channels, hinting at creative customization possibilities. Although some may lament the absence of an Arkveld mount, the innovative cart design has garnered positive feedback for its unique capabilities.
As the presentation concluded, Yoshida announced the upcoming release of three outfits inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics characters, set to debut on the online store on September 30. This addition will coincide with the launch of The Ivalice Chronicles, alongside orchestrion rolls for players to collect.
