Experts urge caution over social media apps in connection to arrest of SC Rep. RJ May

In a significant development, Lexington County State House Representative RJ May has been indicted on multiple federal charges related to child sex abuse material. The unsealed court filings reveal that May faces nearly a dozen charges, prompting federal prosecutors to argue for his detention prior to trial.

Details of the Allegations

According to the government’s motion for detention, May allegedly utilized four distinct applications—Kik, Telegram, Mega, and Loki Messenger—to distribute child sexual assault material (CSAM). Notably, investigators reported that all four apps were deleted within seconds of each other in April of last year, just four months before a search warrant was executed at May’s residence.

Kik, a messaging platform that allows users to communicate without needing a registered phone number, presents accessibility challenges, particularly for younger users. Telegram and Mega, both cloud-based services, are often favored by individuals involved in CSAM due to their encryption features and foreign ownership. Similarly, Loki Messenger offers end-to-end encryption, further complicating oversight.

Expert Insights on Online Safety

Rebecca Lorik, the executive director of Pathways to Healing, emphasized the growing dangers associated with social media platforms. “Kik, for instance, allows easy access for children to communicate with strangers, which raises significant concerns,” she stated. Lorik urged parents to take an active role in their children’s online activities, highlighting the importance of setting clear guidelines and maintaining open lines of communication.

  • Know Your Child: Engage in conversations with your child about their online interactions.
  • Educate Yourself: Stay informed about the potential dangers that new technologies may pose.
  • Consult Experts: Reach out to professionals for guidance on navigating the digital landscape.

As the landscape of social media continues to evolve, Lorik stresses the necessity for parents to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their children from the risks associated with these platforms.
