On Friday evening, around 8:19 PM local time, users in Bangladesh began to see a gradual restoration of Facebook and Messenger services following a widespread outage that affected several platforms owned by Meta. While some individuals regained access to both the web and mobile versions of these services, many continued to experience issues such as slow loading times, failures in refreshing timelines, and delays in messaging.
The disruption first emerged at approximately 7:34 PM, when users attempting to log into Facebook via desktop encountered error messages. For some, the mobile app remained stuck on previously loaded pages, while Messenger users found themselves unexpectedly logged out. Initial reports indicated that other Meta platforms were functioning normally; however, users later reported similar disruptions on Instagram, Threads, and certain WhatsApp services. While the WhatsApp mobile app continued to operate for many, others faced challenges with its web version.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone addressed the situation on X, acknowledging the difficulties users were facing in accessing the company’s services and assuring that efforts were underway to resolve the issue. As of the latest updates, the cause of the outage had not been disclosed by Meta.
Service Recovery and User Experience
As users flocked to Downdetector to check the status of Meta’s platforms, the site itself briefly encountered problems due to the surge in traffic. Reports of issues began to wane as some services started to recover, yet access remained inconsistent for a significant number of users. By 10:07 PM, Facebook and Messenger were showing signs of recovery, although it was clear that full operational capacity had not yet been restored. As it stands, Meta has yet to provide a timeline for when all services will be completely back online.
