Widespread Disruption Across Facebook Services
In a significant disruption, Facebook has experienced a major outage affecting its core app and Messenger service. Users reported being automatically logged out, only to encounter an error message stating, “an unexpected error occurred” when attempting to log back in. The main Facebook website echoed this sentiment, displaying a message indicating that “something went wrong” and assuring users that the company is “working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.”
While the outage has predominantly impacted Facebook and Messenger, other Meta platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp, have largely remained operational. However, some users have reported issues with Instagram’s website, suggesting that the underlying systems may still be experiencing strain.
Interestingly, Downdetector, a well-known service for tracking outages, also appeared to falter around the same time as Facebook’s issues began. Prior to its downtime, Downdetector indicated a significant spike in outage reports starting at approximately 6:45 AM local Pacific time (2:45 PM in the UK), highlighting widespread problems across Facebook’s suite of products.
Despite the scale of the outage, Meta has not provided an official status update for its consumer services, which has left many users in the dark. The company does maintain a status page for its business tools, but it had not been updated to reflect the current situation at the time of this report.
