Meta is closing Messenger.com – users will be redirected to Facebook

In a significant shift for its messaging platform, Meta has announced that Messenger.com, the dedicated website for its messaging service, will be discontinued in April 2026. This move means that users will no longer be able to send messages through the standalone site. Instead, those wishing to maintain their browser-based communication will need to navigate to facebook.com/messages, which offers a similar interface to what they have grown accustomed to.

Transitioning to Facebook

As part of this transition, Meta has indicated that users attempting to access Messenger.com will be automatically redirected to Facebook. This change is particularly noteworthy for Messenger users who have deactivated their Facebook accounts; they will find themselves with limited options, as the mobile app will be their sole means of accessing the messaging service. To utilize Messenger through a browser, a Facebook account will be a prerequisite.

Interestingly, Meta has not provided specific reasons for the closure of the Messenger website. This announcement follows the company’s earlier decision in December 2025 to shut down the Facebook Messenger application for Windows and Mac. This application was initially introduced as a competitor to platforms like Zoom during the pandemic, but it ultimately failed to gain traction.

As Meta continues to streamline its services, users will need to adapt to these changes while navigating the evolving landscape of online communication.
