Samsung Makes Bold Move to Replace Messaging App
In a surprising move, Samsung has decided to remove its built-in messaging app from its pre-installed list and replace it with Google Messaging. This decision marks a significant shift in the tech giant’s strategy, both internally and for consumers.
While Samsung has discontinued the legacy Samsung Messages app from newer mobile devices, it has not completely removed it as a service offering. Instead, the company has chosen to favor Google Messages by making it the default messaging app on all Galaxy models. This change is already in effect in the US, with other countries set to follow based on local compliance rules. The Samsung Messages app can still be downloaded globally from the Play Store, but it remains unclear if Samsung is phasing it out.
According to Samsung, Google Messages provides better support for the RCS format compared to the Samsung Messages app. With the evolution of text messages to RCS format, Samsung Messages has struggled to keep up due to various local carrier rules and integration challenges. Google’s extensive network of local partners and established integration technology allows for a more seamless RCS experience.
This transition began quietly in 2021 when Google Messages became the default app in multiple regions. As Samsung continues to push for Google Messages, it is also enabling RCS format by default in the new Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 models, which will no longer come preloaded with Samsung Messages.
According to an official notice on the members-only forum, Samsung stated, “Starting with Flip6, Fold6, and newer models, the Samsung Messages app will no longer be preloaded. Instead, Google Messages will provide a new and enhanced experience to express your emotions, making communication safe and fun.” The company also mentioned that while the Samsung Messages app will still be available globally, many features will be excluded in future versions, leading to its removal from the list of best messaging apps worldwide.
