WhatsApp is working on a new chat recording feature powered by Meta AI

Meta continues to enhance the user experience on WhatsApp with the introduction of new features aimed at making interactions more intuitive and personalized. Following the launch of Meta AI earlier this year, which serves as a personal assistant within the app, the company has made strides to ensure that users can engage with the platform in a more meaningful way. The recent addition of Hindi language support is just one of the many steps taken to broaden accessibility and usability for a diverse audience.

WhatsApp’s chat memory feature

In an exciting development, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature dubbed “chat memory.” This innovative addition is designed to allow Meta AI to automatically remember certain details shared by users during their interactions. The goal is to enhance the personalization of responses, making them more relevant and tailored to individual preferences.

With this feature, Meta AI will have the capability to recall various personal details, such as dietary preferences—like veganism—birthdays, and even communication styles, such as a preference for formal or casual tones. Additionally, it can track allergies and interests, including favorite books, documentaries, and podcasts.

The chat memory feature aims to significantly elevate the quality of interactions users have with Meta AI. For example, when a user seeks food recommendations, the AI will be able to avoid suggesting dishes that the user has previously indicated they dislike or are allergic to. This level of customization not only fosters a more engaging experience but also allows Meta AI to function more effectively as a personal assistant.

Importantly, users will retain complete control over what information Meta AI remembers. They will have the ability to update or delete specific details at any time, ensuring that privacy and personal space are respected.

Concerns with memory tools

While the potential of memory features in AI applications is promising, it is not without its challenges. Previous attempts by other companies to implement similar functionalities have faced scrutiny. For instance, Microsoft introduced a feature called Recall, which received criticism for infringing on user privacy. Google took a more cautious approach with its Pixel screenshots feature, allowing users to control which details are recorded.

According to the WABeta report, WhatsApp’s chat memory feature will also empower users to decide what information they wish to save. However, the true effectiveness and reception of this feature will only be revealed upon its official release.
