WhatsApp’s New Feature To Help Users Stay Safe In Group Messaging

The update is similar to the current experience in 1:1 messaging.

New Delhi: Meta-owned WhatsApp introduced a new feature on Tuesday aimed at enhancing user safety in group messaging. The feature has already begun rolling out to users and will be accessible to all users in the upcoming weeks, as per the company’s announcement.

When users are added to a group by an unfamiliar individual, they will now receive a context card providing more details about the group. This information includes the identity of the person who added them, the group’s creation date, and the creator’s identity. Users can then make an informed decision about remaining in or leaving the group, as well as explore the safety tools available to ensure a secure experience on WhatsApp.

The company emphasized that this new feature is particularly beneficial when users encounter new individuals or groups without having saved their contacts, or when they need to confirm the familiarity or desirability of a group. WhatsApp stated, “This update offers users an additional layer of safety and security, complementing existing features such as silencing unknown callers, chat lock, in-app privacy check-up, and group membership control.”

Furthermore, the company highlighted that the update mirrors the current experience in 1:1 messaging, where users receive additional context when receiving messages from unknown individuals.
