All phones sold in India will be pre-installed with a state-owned ‘security’ app that needs access to all phone permissions — and you can’t delete or uninstall it

What you need to know

The Indian government’s Department of Telecommunications has issued a directive requiring all phone manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on their devices. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity and security for users across the nation.

  • Android device manufacturers are expected to comply by pre-installing the app on all future models.
  • Additionally, an over-the-air (OTA) update will be rolled out to ensure existing devices also have the app installed.
  • Apple is included in this mandate, necessitating the inclusion of the app on iPhones as well.

While Android devices often grapple with issues of bloatware, the introduction of government-mandated applications adds another layer of complexity, particularly in India, where app permissions can be a contentious topic. The Sanchar Saathi app, which has already garnered over 10 million downloads on the Play Store, is set to become a standard feature on all phones sold in the country, further solidifying its presence in the mobile ecosystem.

Notably, the app requires extensive permissions, including access to phone state, SMS, camera, call logs, and device storage, ostensibly to facilitate features such as tracking lost devices. Users must grant these permissions to utilize the app fully; otherwise, it exits automatically.

As for the manufacturers, Vivo, Xiaomi, and OnePlus have yet to release official statements regarding the implementation of this directive. OPPO has indicated that it is currently assessing the situation, with a statement expected soon. Samsung, in its characteristic fashion, has not responded to inquiries at this time, but updates will be provided as they become available.
