Amazon App Store to close on Android

The Android Amazon App Store is poised to shut its doors on August 20th of this year, marking a significant shift in the landscape of app distribution. According to a report from TechCrunch, Amazon has communicated to developers through a notice and a newly established support page that the submission of new applications to the store will no longer be permitted.

Transitioning Away from Android

As of the closure date, developers will also lose access to the store on Android devices. In tandem with this decision, Amazon will be discontinuing its Coins program, effective the same day. Users holding any remaining coins will receive refunds, ensuring a smooth transition for those affected.

Still available on Amazon devices

While the submission of new apps has come to an end, developers retain the ability to submit updates for their existing applications until the August deadline. This allows for a final opportunity to refine and enhance their offerings before the store ceases operations on Android.

In a notable development for Japanese users, the ability to make in-app purchases on Android devices will also be halted. However, these transactions will remain accessible through alternative marketplaces until the store’s official closure.

Despite the impending shutdown on Android, the Amazon App Store will continue to function on other platforms, including Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices, ensuring that users can still access a variety of applications in the Amazon ecosystem.
