Amazon pulls the plug on its Android app store that you never used anyway

The Amazon Appstore, once a prominent player in the realm of Android applications, is set to close its doors for Android devices on August 20, 2025. This decision marks the end of an era for users who have relied on the platform as an alternative to the Google Play Store.

Transitioning Landscape

As the digital landscape evolves, the Amazon Appstore has served as a key resource for many, particularly for those utilizing Amazon Fire devices. However, with the impending shutdown, users will no longer be able to download or utilize apps from the Appstore on their Android devices post-deadline. This change has been confirmed through an update to the Appstore FAQ, which states:

“Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device.”

Moreover, any applications downloaded from the Appstore will not be guaranteed functionality on Android devices after this date. It’s important to note, however, that Amazon’s Fire-branded devices will remain unaffected by this transition.

“Amazon Appstore will continue to be available elsewhere, including on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices.”

Developer Adjustments

In light of this closure, Amazon has informed developers that they will no longer be able to submit new applications targeting Android devices. Nevertheless, they can still provide updates to their existing apps until the service is fully discontinued.

Additionally, the Amazon Coins program will also be phased out on the same date. Users have until August 20, 2025, to utilize any remaining Coins in their accounts, as new purchases will no longer be possible. Any Coins left unspent after this date will be refunded.

Wider Implications

This decision aligns with Amazon’s broader strategy, as it follows closely on the heels of the March 5, 2025, deadline for Appstore support on Windows through the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). With Microsoft having ceased support for WSA last year, the ability to download apps and games from the Appstore will remain until March 2025, but the future looks increasingly limited.

While the Amazon Appstore will continue to operate on Fire-branded devices, this shift indicates a narrowing focus for Amazon, concentrating on a more controlled ecosystem. As the company pivots away from the Android platform, it raises questions about the future of third-party app stores in an increasingly competitive environment.
