Android 17 comes with a more convenient media app switcher

Google has recently unveiled Android 17 QPR1 Beta 3, introducing a series of user interface enhancements that promise to refine the user experience. Among the most significant updates is the reimagined media app switcher, which departs from the familiar carousel format.

New media app switcher in Android 17

The previous iteration in Android 16 featured a media app switcher nestled within the notification shade, requiring users to swipe left and right to navigate between active media applications. In contrast, Android 17 opts for a more intuitive approach, streamlining the process of switching between apps.

In this new design, Android condenses the media apps into compact cards that expand upon tapping. This not only enhances convenience but also reduces the likelihood of user error, making it clearer for newcomers that they can effortlessly toggle between media applications.

However, this design choice comes with its trade-offs. The minimized audio app cards occupy more screen real estate, resulting in a smaller active music app tab and consequently reduced player controls. Such adjustments are typical of beta versions, where the focus is on testing and refining features before the final release.

As this working prototype evolves, users can anticipate further modifications to the media player switcher ahead of the stable launch of Android 17.
