Android Auto may finally let users switch to a different dialer app (APK teardown)

Google is making strides in enhancing the functionality of Android Auto by potentially introducing support for third-party dialer applications. Currently, users are limited to Google’s Phone app for making calls, leaving no room for alternatives like Truecaller, ACR Phone, or Drupe on their vehicle’s display. However, recent developments suggest that this may soon change.

Emerging Features in Android Auto

In the latest release of Android Auto (version 13.0), new flags have been identified that indicate forthcoming support for external dialer apps. These flags not only confirm the integration of third-party dialers but also suggest that Google will implement an allowlist system. This means that only a select number of dialer applications will be accessible through the car’s infotainment system, necessitating that developers tailor their applications to meet Android Auto’s specifications.

To facilitate this transition, Google provides comprehensive guidelines aimed at helping developers optimize their apps for Android Auto. These guidelines include various app-building templates designed to ensure a user-friendly interface while driving. Among these resources is a dedicated category for calling apps, although it is currently restricted to Beta Partners only. This limitation implies that only a small selection of dialer apps from the Play Store will be available for use in vehicles, yet it marks a positive step towards broader app compatibility.

As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the anticipation surrounding which dialer apps will ultimately be included in this new feature is palpable. The integration of third-party dialers could significantly enhance the user experience for Android Auto users, offering more choices and flexibility in how they manage their communications on the road.
